A new comedy about pregnancy depression that premiered on Hulu this week is sure to spark controversy.
The Funny, Undine, which stars Melissa McCarthy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as mothers and fathers, centers on a mother who becomes pregnant and struggles with depression.
The show premiered to a raucous response on Twitter and Reddit this week.
“That was just such a dumb idea,” McCarthy said in an interview with ABC News.
“We’ve seen so many things that have gone wrong with pregnancy in the last 10 years, that were pretty common in those early weeks, when you were just in shock.
But the idea of me being the one that was struggling with depression?
That’s really the worst.
It’s just not funny.”
McCarthy has since tweeted a photo of herself with her son with depression and wrote: “This is what depression looks like: a huge lump on your face and the biggest laugh you’ve ever had.
It was just a stupid idea.”
